What is the Arknights: Prelude to Dawn anime based on?

If you’ve heard of Arknights before, you’re probably thinking of the mobile RPG game by Chinese Developer, Hypergryph.

The game, which debuted in China back in 2019, is available for download on both iOS and Android platforms. It is considered to be one of the more popular gacha games available. These are video games that take after the concept of toy vending machines and encourage users to spend in-game currency on enhancements like special items or characters. The catch is that usually, like vending machines, these enhancements are completely random.

Still, the game has gotten plenty of praise and accolades for its ever-evolving artwork and well-thought-out lore. Having found quite a bit of success as a game, getting an anime only seems natural. This feels especially true after the success of the recent Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series.

What is the Arknights franchise about?

If you’ve never played the game, you’re probably unfamiliar with the premise of the franchise.

Set in a post-apocalyptic future on a planet called Terra, some people exhibit animal-like characteristics called kemonomimi features. However, the planet is plagued by natural disasters. Left behind by these disasters is a mineral called originium, which causes a disease called oripathy after long exposure.

While oripathy is considered a terminal disease, it does give those affected the ability to use “Arts”, otherwise known as magic. However, these powers only lead to further prosecution.

In the game, players take on the role of the “Doctor” who commands a team of “operators” in a pharmaceutical, medical, and self-defense organization known as Rhode Island. They search for a cure, while simultaneously defending themselves from the government.

It is said that the series will adapt the Act Initium: Hour of an Awakening story arc from the game, which is essentially the beginning of the game.
