What is the plot of My Clueless First Friend?

The story centers on a young Japanese boy named Takada-kun, who is a bit of an airhead. When he transfers to a new school the first thing he notices is that one of his fellow classmates has an interesting reputation. Due to the fact that Nishimura-san has eyes like a dead fish and a gloomy hair cut everyone calls her the Grim Reaper.

Instead of finding this off-putting Takada-kun thinks that it’s cool and amazing that she has such a neat nickname and apparently has superpowers that allow her to curse people. Did I mention Takada-kun is a bit of an airhead? Takada-kun even asks Nishimura-san if he can touch her so that he can get cursed.

Nishimura-san warns him that if they’re seen hanging out together people will begin to call him “the Grim Reaper’s friend” or he might get a “death curse” placed on him. Instead of being frightened by this Takada-kun thinks that would be amazing. Takada-kun doesn’t seem to understand that Nishimura is being bullied by her classmates.

Later, a group of boys ask Takada-kun to walk home with them instead of the Grim Reaper and say they’ll even let him join the “Scorpion Gang”. Takada-kun misunderstands and believes that Nishimura can join too. The boys have a hard time explaining that they weren’t inviting Nishimura at all, but Takada insists that Nishimura is amazing because of her Grim Reaper powers. Takada ends up walking home with Nishimura instead and even holds her hand. When she shyly asks him why he’s holding her hand he says it’s so he can get cursed.

The saying, “ignorance is bliss” really fits Takada, who goes around hyping Nishimura up until his classmates just don’t know how to react. Will Takada eventually be able to change everyone’s minds about Nishimura with his continued enthusiasm? And what did Takada mean when he said Nishimura’s dead fish eyes were beautiful? Could this be a pure, budding romance?
